The surge of water knocked out power at the coastal Fukushima plant, leading to the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. The disaster leads to tens of thousands of people leaving the area along with a devastated local economy & swathes of unfarmable land due to spewing radiation from the ruins JAPAN SWITCHES OFF NUCLEAR GOODBYE NUCLEAR DISASTER 丸 A new era without NUCLEAR POWER has begun! Critics of nuclear power say Japan has managed thus far with its ever dwin- dling pool of reactors and need not look back. In a historic leap, the world's 3rd largest economy has shutdown its entire stable of 50 nuclear reactors. 5500 demonstrators staged a rally at a park near Tokyo Tower and later marched through central Tokyo in protest against nuclear power. Japan should concentrate on ramping up renewables and boosting energy efficiency, say climate and energy campaigners.
