It's more than just the trees: Why you should go paper-free
When people think of paper, they usually think trees. But 'trees' arguably present the least of paper's environment troubles. The 500 pounds of paper used by each American every year requires 2 l... itres of petroleum, 191 kg of coal (about as much as a wine barrel). When the paper that is not recycled decomposes in a landfill, it releases the greenhouse gas methane. All of that, when burned, releases the 167 cubic metres of carbon dioxide, which would make a sphere of gas 7 metres high.Paper production is the third most energy-intensive of all manufacturing industries, using over 12 percent of all energy in the industrial sector. The paper and pulp industry is also the fourth largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the manufacturing sector. Most of this paper often just for a single use before it's thrown away. Don't think recycling is a panacea. Consider the environmental impact during the birth of the product. Go paper free.
