An introduction to fracking

FRACKING Fracking is the process of injecting gallons of water, sand and chemicals at enormous pressure underground to extract gas and oil from shale rock formations. Also known as "Hydraulic Fracturing". THE LARGEST KNOWN RESERVES IN THE WORLD AT THE MOMENT China USA Argentina Mexico PROS Fracking could make the US energy independent because they have so many domestic resources Less dependence on foreign energy sources will lower energy costs helping to revive the world's Not using fracking would significantly reduce the supply of gas hence forcing energy prices to increase economies The US alone has an estimated 2,400 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas Natural gas sources have been found in abundance all over the world The public aren't well informed about the fracking process which has led to exaggerated concerns about the effects * straightforward mining has caused a number or earthquakes over the years which isn't being taken into consideration Fracking will provide us with a realistic way of getting closer to our target of reaching a renewable energy source Fracking sites will not be unsightly as the work will be done underground and will only be temporary, 6 to 8 months at most WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF FRACKING CONTINUES? Natural gas could one day replace coal and oil as the major energy source worldwide leading to a reduction in C02 emissions by more than 50% 200+ yrs Fracking could provide us with energy supplies for the next 200 plus years Within the next 2 years fracking will provide over half of the USA's energy supply In the next 3 to 5 years, 8 million 8-wheeler trucks could be running on natural gas 2005 Fracking will result in US greenhouse emissions falling below those in 2005 2040 by the year 2040 とぶど CONS Some scientists believe fracking induces earthquakes Earthquakes have already been reported in a number of US states including In 2009 Oklahoma experienced over 1,000 Oklahoma Ohio Pennsylvania earthquakes compared to the average of 50 per year as a result of fracking Fracking is replacing greenhouse gases as the primary concern of environmentalists Wells have burst in the past Tap water associated with fracking releasing 82% methane causing has caught fire proving the high levels of chemicals people to vomit WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF FRACKING CONTINUES? Fracking will contaminate groundwater, pollute air and threaten wild lands It will release methane into the air which is CO2 20 times as potent as CO2 Possible Harmful Effects ! air pollution will be reduced visibility climate change vegetation will be destroyed toxic to humans Contaminated drinking water that sets fire due to the chemicals Enough wells to fill the whole of Wales would be needed to produce enough gas to fuel the proposed 30 to 40 power stations Fracking wells will begin to pop up all over the world causing deep cracks in the earth OPINIONS "I've worked on over 2,000 fracking wells and have seen no environmental issues as a result" -T. Boone Pickens of BP Capital- "It's green, it's cheap and it's plentiful! So why are opponents of shale gas making such a fuss?" -Boris Johnson- "Fracking is a huge concern on a local, national and global level" -Frack-off.org.uk- "Right now, some people are trying to make easy money, and meanwhile ruin this country's future, by a thing called 'fracking'." -Yoko Ono, Artists Against Fracking- Which side are you on?
