Instagram vs The New York Times

Gnstagram vs. York Times The New What's a company worth, anyways? On April 9, 2012, Facebook purchased Instagram for $1 billion. The New York Times, on that same day, had a market capitalization of a little over 946 million, based on a $6.40 stock price. (Its market cap has since shrank further, to $888.67 mil, as of May 7.) The fact that a 2-year-old startup with 12 employees could theoretically be valued higher -- by Mark Zuckerberg, at least -- than one of the world's most venerable media companies, raises a lot of questions. In this infographic, you will see valuations that reveal how some iconic companies and brands are worth less in the eyes of investors these days than certain hot new startups.
