Inside A Volcanic Eruption

Inside a volcanic eruption

Conduit

A volcanic eruption is the ejection of molten rock, or lava, with ash, hot water, rock fragments, and cliff soil through an opening in the Earth's surface

The Earth's crust Magma chamber Magma tubes

Magma and the volcanic eruption process:

A hot silicate mixture, magma forms in the Earth's crust or inside the upper mantle of the Earth

It is comprised of molten lithospheric rocks, as well as gases and water vapor

Lighter than surrounding rocks, it rises slowly to the surface and builds up in underground reservoirs, called magma chambers

The gas pressure increases, and gases being to spew out

The magma rises to the surface

The gases expand as the magma rises along the conduit

The magma swells up and explodes

It now moves more quickly along the conduit. This process becomes unstable and turbulent

The magma pulsates and explodes as it leaves the chamber

Lava, a fiery mixture of semi-molten rock, gases, vapor, and ash is ejected onto the surface with tremendous force Inside a volcanic eruption A typical volcano A volcanic eruption is the ejection of molten rock, or lava, with ash, hot water, rock fragments, gases, and cliff soil through an opening in the Earth's surface Crater Lava Conduit- The Earth's crust Magma chamber Magma tubes Magma and the volcanic eruption process: · A hot silicate mixture, magma forms in the Earth's crust or inside the upper mantle of the Earth - It is comprised of molten lithospheric rocks, as well as gases and water vapor Lighter than surrounding rocks, it rises slowly to the surface and builds up in underground reservoirs, called magma chambers - The gas pressure increases, and gases begin to spew out The magma rises to the surface - The gases expand as the magma rises along the conduit - The magma swells up and explodes - It now moves more quickly along the conduit.
