an INFOGRAPHỊC TIMELINE of TIMELINES & ÎNFOGRAPHICS* *Featuring the Isotype of Gerd Arntz and the official typeface of the Vienna Method, FUTURA 40,000 BCE: The first known pictographic symbols are painted on the walls of caves in modern-day Spain. 7,000-4,000 BCE: Symbolic language emerges in Neolithic Asia, Europe and the Middle East. 1790: Scotsman William Playfair, credited with inventing the area, pie, line and bar graphs, publishes his first chart representing the 18th Century English economy. CU 1820s: Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Ritter establish modern geography, including symbols and legends. A 1857: Florence Nightingo in her infographics depicting causes of mortality during the Crimean War. invents the polar area diagram 1861: Charles Joseph Minard captures four changing variables in a single two-dimensional chart showing the decline of the Grande Armée in their March on Moscow. 1925: Otto Neurath, along with a team of designers including Gerd Arntz, begin the ten-year process of developing Isotype.
