CU 1820s: Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Ritter establish modern geography, including symbols and legends. A 1857: Florence Nightingo in her infographics depicting causes of mortality during the Crimean War. invents the polar area diagram 1861: Charles Joseph Minard captures four changing variables in a single two-dimensional chart showing the decline of the Grande Armée in their March on Moscow. 1925: Otto Neurath, along with a team of designers including Gerd Arntz, begin the ten-year process of developing Isotype.
