SANDWICH GENERATION HR Survival Guide The Millions of employees around the country are responsible for caring for both their children and parents. Known as the "Sandwich Generation," because their needs can become "sandwiched" between the caregiving responsibilities of their children and parents, these adults struggle to balance the needs of these two generations at a time when they are also busy working and planning their own futures. This survival guide aims to help HR departments and managers better understand the Sandwich Generation and effectively provide these employees assistance and support. SURVIVAL TIPS Understand the Impact Many employees who are caregivers are reluctant to request assistance or disclose information about their situation. Create an environment where employees feel comfortable asking for help and support. 75% of individuals are employed while caring for aging parents. - Workforce.com 63% of HR professionals state that the increasing number of employees with caring responsibilities will have a major impact on the U.S. workplace over the next five years. - Society of Human Resources Management 49% of the U.S. workforce expects to be providing elder care by 2015. -AARP Public Policy Institute 47% of adults in their 40s and 50s have a parent age 65 or older and are either raising a young child or financially supporting a grown child (age 18 or older). - 2013 Pew Research Consider the Costs The Sandwich Generation can cost a company billions of dollars each year in lost productivity, turnover and increased medical costs. Employee assistance programs can help organizations minimize the group's impact on the bottom line. Companies should provide financial advisors, workshops and other resources to help employees manage these monetary commitments.
