An Infograph About The History Of Helical Piles

History Of Helical Piles From ancient times to the modern world mankind has relied upon and advanced pile technology. See how it happened. Original Tree House Switzerland -4,000 B.C. The idea of using a pile for construction is traditionally credited to a Neolithic tribe called the "Swiss Lake Dwellers" who lived in what is now Switzerland. They used piling not for supporting heavy loads as we do today, but for to elevate their homes to protect themselves from wildlife. Think of it as the original tree house. Bridges ~1,620 B.C. Tiber River, Rome The Romans built the first bridge across the Tiber River in Rome using timber piles in l620 B.C. Timber piles were so effective they also used them to build the first bridge across the Thames River a millennia and a half later in London in 60 A.D. The still excellent condition of the Thames River piles re-used for the Circus in Arles (in France).built in 148 A.D. on wetlands. Water Front Homes Venice, Italy 100 B.C. The now world famous houses located in the cities of Venice and Ravenna were built on piles from from 10o B.C. to 400 A.D. Water Locks 1825 New York The water locks of the Erie Canal in New York (completed in 1825), were supported by timber piles. Each lock was supported on 700 piles (coming in at a height of 6'). arranged in rows of 15 to 20 piles across the width and two feet apart. Lighthouses England 1830 Alexander Mitchell is credited with revolutionizing the usage of piles. He invented the screwpile, which was a major improvement over the standard wooden straight pile construction type. This new type of metallic pile, equipped with helix shaped blades, was screwed down into the earth and able to penetrate bedrock deep beneath loose soil. Global Engineering Present Day Today the usage of piles is still commonplace on a global scale. Mitchell's screwpile innovation, although the same in concept, has been greatly improved upon. The foundation repair industry now generally refers to modern day screwpiles as Helical Piles, because of their helices. Information Assembled By Pier Masters A Kansas City Foundation Repair Company
