Human Rights Campaign's Jewish Organization Equality Index

A look at the Jewish Organization Equality Index (and the implications for our community) PURPOSE XX The Jewish Organization Equality Index (JOEI) is the Human Rights Campaign's first-ever survey of inclusion within a faith-based community. It establishes preliminary benchmarks of Jewish nonprofit organizations' policies and practices as they relate to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members, clients, volunteers and employees. JOEI's primary goal is to spark community-wide dialogue, education and engagement on the advantages and opportunities for fully welcoming LGBT Jews into organizational and communal life. RESPONSES Open to all organizations within the Jewish community, from major national advocacy groups to small local nonprofits to synagogues, a total of 204 organizations completed the Jewish Organization Equality Index. O British Columbia Ontario FINDINGS = progress The JOEI survey measures how organizations address LGBT diversity and inclusion within three categories: ORGANIZATIONAL INCLUSION EFFORTS Practices that encourage contributions from the LGBT community in support of inclusion in the workplace and programming. TRAINING CONSULTATION RECRUITMENT 41% 55% 21% of organizations said had reached out of organizations have completed diversity or inclusion training of any kind in the past three years. to local or national LGBT organizations the past three years for advice on programming and to help attract LGBT community members. of organizations expressed they have specifically targeted the LGBT community in employee recruitment efforts in the past three years. in COMMUNITY AND CLIENT ENGAGEMENT Programs specifically for LGBT members and clients. OUTREACH PROGRAMMING ANTI-BULLYING FRI 66% 49% 33% of local organizations provided some İGBT-specific programming. of the 94 of organizations actively reach out to the LGBT community to attract members or clients. organizations that have youth programs have an anti-bullying policy. WORKPLACE POLICIES & PRACTICES Written non-discrimination policies and benefits that support LGBT employees are the foundation of an organization's diversity and inclusion efforts. NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY 27% No written policy 35% INCLUSIVE POLICIES including "gender identity" or "gender identity expression" 8% Policies with no mention of sexual orientation or gender identity 30% Policies including "sexual orientation" only 73% of JOEI respondents have a written non-discrimination policy; 89% of these include "sexual orientation" but only 48% include “gender identity" or "gender identity expression." The inclusion of transgender individuals must be considered just as much a priority as LGB inclusion. RESULTS Based on a numerical score, organizations were placed into one of four categories describing policies and activities around LGBT diversity and inclusion thus far. INCLUSION ADAPTATION EXPLORATION CONTEMPLATION Organizations demonstrate the benefits of a fully engaged LGBT community, and inclusion efforts Organizations are implementing new policies and practices aimed at fostering inclusion Organizations are examining available avenues to creating cultural change, but have yet to Organizations have recognized that the inclusion of the LGBT community may present unique opportunities and challenges, but has yet to identify a path forward. of the LGBT are integrated into everyday functioning of the organization. community within their groups. take action or have only just begun.
