How Zit Going? Caring for Acne

HOW ZIT GOING? CARING FOR CARME FOR A CANE Acne plagues about 40 to 50 million people in the United States. About 85% of people ages 12-24 develop acne. While it's not a life-threatening condition, acne can cause scars and leave you feeling unconfident, depressed, and unwilling to show your face to anyone. But don't lose hope! Learn about acne and the right ways to combat it. WHAT'S IN YOUR SKIN? Eccrine sweat pore Hair follicle pore Hair follicle Sebum Eccrine Sebaceous gland sweat gland Apocrine sweat gland Dermis layer. Sebaceous gland: This gland is connected to the hair follicle and produces an oily substance called sebum. Sebum helps to protect and lubricate hair and skin and is released through the hair follicle pore. Apocrine sweat gland: This gland is connected to the hair follicle and produces an odorous sweat that is released through the hair follicle pore. Eccrine sweat gland: This gland produces odorless sweat that is released through its own sweat pore in the skin, not the hair follicle. HOW PIMPLES DEVELOP Pimples develop when hair follicles become clogged with sebum, dead skin cells, and other debris. This clogged environment allows bacteria to multiply, leading to infection and inflammation-in other words, pesky pimples Acne Vulgaris The occasional pimple is a different story than acne. Acne vulgaris (aka acne) is the chronic condition of pimples and can vary in severity. Genetics and hormones are the root causes of acne. Acne affects both men and women of all ages, from puberty to adulthood. TYPES OF PIMPLES Comedones – These non-inflamed pimples consist of follicles clogged with dead skin cells and oil. These appear in two forms: Whiteheads – Comedones that are closed at the surface of the skin. Blackheads – Comedones that remain open at the skin's surface. The black color is not caused by melanin, not dirt. Melanin, which gives skin, hair, and eyes their color, is also present in sebum and turns dark when it reacts with air. Papules – Small pink bumps that are often tender to the touch. These are a form of comedones that have become inflamed. Pustules – Another form of inflamed comedones that resemble whiteheads and are red at the base, filled with pus, and tender. Nodules – Large, painful, inflamed bumps that feel firm and develop deep within the skin. Cysts – Painful, pus-filled lesions resembling boils. THE DAILY REGIMEN Maintaining a daily skincare regimen is an important part of keeping acne under control. Perform your regimen twice a day, morning and night. Here's an example of a regimen. Note that yours might be different, depending on what works for you. 1 Cleanse Use warm water and a gentle cleanser. • Gently rub the cleanser over your face in small circles for about 15 seconds. Pat dry with a clean towel 2 Treat Apply the treatment of your choice. The two most common treatments: Benzoyl peroxide gets inside the pores to treat bacteria. Note: Use a product with a 2.5% concentration. Higher concentrations will lead to irritated, dry skin. Salicylic acid encourages the natural shedding of dead skin cells and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. 3 Moisturize Apply a gentle moisturizer to keep skin hydrated, protected, and balanced. WHAT MAKES ACNE WORSE Picking at Skin Popping zits and picking at your skin leads • Irritation and inflammation of existing acne • More zits • Scars • Infection Over-Cleansing Using harsh, abrasive scrubs or cleaning too hard removes the natural oils that your skin needs. Stress Stress can cause your adrenal glands to work overtime, leading to more hormones triggering excess sebum production. Stress also often leads to more skin picking. THINGS TO REMEMBER Shop carefully 2 Use a light sunblock Look for products that • Match your skin type (oily, dry, or a mix of the two) • Are non-comedogenic, which won't clog your pores and are usually oil-free Certain acne medications leave your skin more sensitive to UV rays, which can cause more inflammation and redness. 4 Eat a balanced diet Stay hydrated There's no evidence to suggest that any specific food causes acne, but good health promotes clear skin. Drinking water keeps your skin hydrated and helps you shed dead skin cells. Foods for healthy skin include: • Fatty fish • Leafy greens • Nuts Exercise Exercise reduces stress and increases blood circulation to your skin cells. Get your beauty sleep Lack of sleep contributes to stress and mood, making your acne feel even worse. Shower immediately after your workouts to keep sweat from irritating your skin. See a specialist For severe acne, consult a dermatologist, who may prescribe oral medications or other treatments and therapies. Stay Positive! Acne is something that you will eventually grow out of. It doesn't affect the beautiful person you truly are. Surround yourself with people who love you, zits and all!
