How to Get Rid of Spiders in Your Home

HOW TO HUMANELY SPIDER-PROOF YOUR HOME Running out from beneath the couch, scurrying across the counter,or slowly descending from above - the sudden appearance of a spider is almost always an unwelcome surprise. If you're keen on reclaiming your nooks and crannies from these 8-legged creatures, here's how. SIMPLE SPIDER PREVENTION MEASURES A few changes around the house can make spiders feel less at home. Natural and environmentally friendly methods are always best. 1.USE A NATURAL DETERRENT Although no studies have been done to conclusively back these spider-repelling concoctions, many people swear by them. WHAT TO DO: 2. VINEGAR SPRAY Combine equal parts of water and vinegar. 1. PEPPERMINT SPRAY Mix 1/2 pint of water with 10 drops of peppermint essential oil. Spray these mixtures at common entry points and in corners. 2. REMOVE SPIDER SHELTERS Spiders often make their homes in dusty corners and behind furniture where they feel safe and comfortable. WHAT TO DO: Vacuum often and thoroughly - removing dust from behind, beneath and on top of furniture. 3. LIMIT THEIR FOOD SOURCE Spiders love eating flies, moths, termites and beetles - creatures that may be living in your home. WHAT TO DO: Clean up any food crumbs attracting other pests. Replace cardboard storage boxes with plastic ones. 4. AVOID OUTDOOR LIGHTING Outdoor lights attract bugs, so spiders will wait near them to catch their prey. WHAT TO DO: Put a bug repellent on light bulbs and use outdoor lights as little as possible. 5. FILL IN THE GAPS From cracks in the wall to gaps around your water taps, any small hole around your house is a perfect entry point for spiders. WHAT TO DO: Use expanded foam to fill in gaps in the walls and a caulk sealant to fill in gaps around pipes, floors and taps. 6. INSTALL SCREENS Other obvious entry points are large holes – windows and doors that you may often leave open. WHAT TO DO: Fit screens on anything that is open to the exterior of your home. 7. PUT IN VENT COVERS FOR WEEP HOLES Though these are necessary for many brick homes, they can easily become an entry point for spiders. WHAT TO DO: Cover them up with plastic or metal vents. 8. GET A PET Dogs and cats love hunting scurrying things such as spiders. Cats have the added benefit of being able to jump and squeeze into hard-to-reach places. WHAT TO DO: Visit your local animal shelter. Most spiders are generally harmless to pets. Best of all? It's been proved pets make us happier, with or without spiders. 9. USE CONKERS It's an old wives tale that spiders hate horse chestnuts. Though there's no scientific proof of this, there's no harm in giving it a go. WHAT TO DO: Place horse chestnuts around the corners of your home. Many of us dream of a spider-less life, but consider they can actually help keep other bugs at bay.
