You can travel 12 times further by train than by plane for the same carbon footprint. We‘ve shown how some ways of travelling are greener than others by taking a fixed carbon budget of 28kg CO2e (the amount of carbon emitted to travel by Eurostar’s ‘snow train’ to and from Megeve ski resort in France) and seeing how far that would take you by other modes of transport. As the transport gets more carbon-intensive, the holiday destination gets closer to home.
We’ve taken into account necessary changes of mode: train to get to the ferry, and Eurostar crossing for coach and small car. Radiative forcing for flights has not been included.
