How cruise ships are evacuated During safety drills, cruise lines must be able to launch passengers in lifeboats within 30 minutes. But safety hazards keep them from fully testing their evacuation plans. Crane arm Cranes store the Crane arm boat above the promenade decks. Door O A crane swings out to deploy the lifeboat. Crane arm Metal cable A winch controls The doors are tarps that can be rolled up to gain entry. cables connected to hooks on the boat. 2 A winch lowers the lifeboat to deck level. Passengers step into the boat. Once inside, passengers sit on benches staggered at two levels. The boat can hold up to 150 people. Top level The helm houses the pilot. Bottom level | Most accidents during drills occur when the boat is | being lowered. Once full, the boat is lowered to the water and cables are released.
