How to Coach through the stages of learning in 3 simple steps 1 Determine where the person is in the learning process. Unconscious Conscious Conscious Unconscious Incompetent Incompetent Competent Competent Stalling Starting Shifting Soaring This person is unaware that there is need for skill development. This person is aware of the need for skill, as well as their inability well, This person knows how to perform the skill, but requires focused thought to do so. This person performs the skill well, without focused thought. to perform it Coach the person according to the place in the learning process. U.I. Build awareness and insight about the need for skill development. Try to ignite their passion for the topic. Reduce their resistance by focusing on the advantages and positive outcomes of leaming the skill, and not on actually learning it. Initiate C.I. Engage Ask for a committment to continue the skill development, even though it is difficult and uncomfortable at this phase. Keep engagement levels high. Work collaboratively with them to address challenges that arise. C.C. Support Build the person's confidence to be confortable performing the skill without your help, while being available if assistance is needed. Consider making a detailed plan to ensure they reach their full potential and don't get complacent during this phase. (U.C. Reinforce Encourage the person to find innovative ways to apply the skill and test their abilities. Reinforce the skill development by delegating tasks in this area. Consider asking them to mentor another person in the development of this same skilI. Can the person perform the skill without assistance? Do they recognize their deficiency in the area? Does their competence come with effort? Do they deny the usefulness or relevance of the skill? Do they see the benefits of improving in this area? Can they perform the skill while doing something else? Are they committed to improve? Could this person teach the skill to someone else?
