The Homeowner's Guide to Staying "Safety Savvy" in the Summer Sun

The Homeowner's Guide to STAYING "SAFETY SAVVY" IN THE SUMMER SUN As the weather warms up, we're dusting off our barbeques, digging out our bathing suits, and getting our backyard pools ready for summer. But even the most enjoyable times call for caution and preparation. Whether you're at home relaxing or off on a family vacation, remember these household guidelines for a satisfying, and safe, summer of fun. BE INFORMED IN THUNDERSTORMS It's best to unplug all appliances and electronics during a thunderstorm because typical surge protectors will not protect them from a lightning strike. Try to avoid taking showers, washing dishes, and any other activity that involves plumbing. When lightning strikes a home, it often travels through metal plumbing pipes and water! Consider installing a lightning protection system (LPS). An LPS can attract nearby lightning and safely direct it straight to the ground. REMINDERS BEFORE GOING ON VACATION Lock all your windows and doors before going away on vacation. Most burglaries occur during the summer, and roughly 30 percent of burglars enter through an unlocked window or door. Consider waiting until you're back home to share photos of your trip – burglars sometimes cross-reference social media to confirm you're away! Make sure to either stop your mail and newspapers or ask a neighbor to bring them in for you. A stuffed mailbox is one of the first things a burglar looks for when selecting a target. SAFETY REQUIRED NEAR THE FIRE Build fires or position your grill at least 10 feet away from dry grass, leaves, buildings, and other combustibles, including your house. 8. Always keep a bucket of water right next to any fires, so you're prepared should an accident occur. Always dispose of ashes in a metal bucket after they have completely cooled. CHARCOAL HOME RULES FOR THE SWIMMING POOL 12 10 Always supervise young children and guests around your pool. Drowning in a home pool is one of the leading causes of death for children under age 5. 10 Make sure that children and inexperienced swimmers wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device while in or near the water. Install safety mechanisms, such as a 4-foot gate around the pool, an alarm to alert you when your children go near the water, and a lockable safety cover on your spa. 8. SUMMER DRIVER SURVIVAL Remind ens to stay safe when they drive. Teens spend 13 44 percent more hours driving in the summer than any other time of year, and therefore have more chances to drive distracted. Forty-nine percent of commuters and 43 percent of teens admit to texting while driving. If you are one of the guilty ones, keep everyone safer by never texting while driving again. Check your tire pressure regularly! When your tires are 15 exposed to higher heat in the summer, the air can expand inside and lead to a tire blowout while driving.
