HOLIDAY ŞPENDING 2012 THANKSGIVING With Thanksgiving just around the corner, Americans across the country are opening their pocket books and preparing to pay for the holidays. This year, 43.6 million Americans plan to travel at least 50 miles from home to celebrate Thanksgiving. Ninety percent will drive to their destinations and spend roughly $498 to get there. $498 = 50+ miles $50 Nearly three-fourths (71%) of Americans will stay home for the holiday. A majority of those cooking the meal estimate it will cost them $50 or more. DECEMBER HOLIDAYS The National Retail Federation predicts holiday sales to grow 4.1% to $586.1 billion this winter. And, the Retail Group estimates that on average, Americans will spend $750 on holiday purchases this year (up nearly $10 from $741 last year). $750 So why the increased spending? These are the primary reasons why investors plan to spend more on the holidays: “I saved properly so I could spend more this year." “Holidays are important to celebrate and I am in the holiday spirit."
