THE HISTORY OF THE SUPER BOWL The First Super Bowl was held on January 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. It started as part of the merger between the NFL and the AFL as a way for the champions of each league to compete for the AFL-NFL 'World Championship Game'. Since then the Super Bowl has become the largest sporting event in the United States; with 106.5 million viewers for Super Bowl XLIV.
