HISTORY Search Engines 1945 The first suggestion of the search engine that can be traced was published in The Atlantic Monthly by Vannevar Bush. It suggested a way of compiling all of the information and periodicals available into a system that would be available for all academics. ATLANTIC MONTHLY 米 1990 Computers and codes finally catch up with Vannevar's idea. Created by a McGill University student, the first web based search engine available publicly was started. "Archie" is generally regarded as the first modern search engine. 1991 e inp The updated versions of Archie launch, which are called Veronica and Jughead. They make the idea of the search engine much more accessible and popular. 1992 * CERN launches a science-specific search engine, VLIB, which is used by laboratories and universities to share documents, articles and study findings. * 1993 Two new search engines are launched, with indiscriminate intended users. World Wide Web Wanderer and Excite are both very different than the engines of today, demanding specific codes and article names in order to produce results. WWW AH AH 1994 David Filo and Jerry Wang launch Yahoo! Direc- tory, which searched popular and listed websites. AH YAHOO! 1994 Two major innovations occur in search engines. Infoseek is the first engine launched that provides realtime results for searchers. Altavista is the first search engine that can successfully fill queries based on natural language, bringing the search engine much closer to that of today. 1996 Larry Page and Sergei Brin, students at Stanford University begin testing on their search engine called Backrub. Backrub's name is changed to Google later. Coogle TM Ask Jeeves 1997 The most popular natural language site for casual users is created. Ask Jeeves used a butler motif to fill searches. 2000 Google partners with Yahoo! to power their searches. Google quickly becomes the biggest competitor to Yahoo! and breaks their partnership. Y 2003 Google launches their AdWords site, creating the foundations for SEO. 70% 2009 By now, Google dominates the search engine industry. It holds over 70% of the searches and listings. To try to regain footing, Microsoft and Yahoo! form a partnership. 70% 70% 70% 70% bing. 2010 Bing is released as the product of the Microsoft- Yahoo! partnership.
