The History of the Rolls Royce

The name Rolls Royce was born some time later, in 1906. The Silver Ghost is launched the following years. 1904 Taking to the sky 1914 In 1914, to aid with the war effort Royce designed his first aero engine, named the Eagle, which would go on to power the first trans-Atlantic flight Need for speed This decade significant for the number of land, sea and airspeed records that were broken, thanks to the Rolls-Royce 'R' engine; for instance the Thunderbolt (pictured below) driven by George Eyston very 1930s Rolls Royce grows from becoming an upstart company, to being a leading manufacturer, in part due to the Second World War and the increased demand for aero engines. 1940s New innovations in the aero industry led to the development of the Gloster Meteor fighter in 1944 Royal Approval The Rolls Royce becomes the car of choice for the British Royal Family in this decade. The Silver Cloud model is introduced in 1955 and has a maximum speed of 106mph. 1950s Showbiz The 60s sees the rise of the Rolls Royce as the choice of car for film stars and musicians. In 1965, John Lennon purchases a Phantom V model. In that same year, Rex Harrison and Ingrid Bergman star in "The Yellow Rolls Royce" Yellew Rells Reyce 1960s INGRID BERGMAN REX HARRISON ALAIN DELON GEORGE C. SCOTT JEANNE MOREAU OMAR SHARIF SHIRLEH MacLAINE VAlleu RlRyc. The 1970s proves to be difficult decade for Rolls Royce. The company goes into receivership and splits to become two separate 1970s companies. Rolls Royce Ltd becomes a branch dealing with aero engines, whilst Rolls Royce Motors Ltd deal with motoring. Back in private hands 1980s The British defence company Vickers buys Rolls Royce Motors Ltd, and the company is floated on the stock exchange. Notable models of this decade include the Silver Spur. New beginnings The company BMW acquires the rights to produce Rolls Royce cars for the first time.
