GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY School of Nursing & Health Studies ALEGACY OF Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies has a long tradition of preparing morally reflective health care leaders and scholars. MILESTONES IN NURSING and GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING & HEALTH STUDIES' HISTORY early 1800s 1800s Hospitals are established in populous regions, such as large cities, but there is little to no standard of care. 1854 Florence Nightingale leads a team of nurses who bring aid to British soldiers on the front lines of the Crimean War. She later returns home to develop the first nursing education programs in British hospitals. 1898 GU 1893 Georgetown University Hospital opens. Lillian Wald founds the Henry Street Settlement House, which offers health care and social services to disadvantaged populations in New York City's Lower East Side. This is the foundation for the development of public health nursing. FIVE THOIISAND BY JUNE 1900s 1903 GU The Georgetown University Hospital Training School for Nurses- now known as Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies- is founded. The first class of eight students graduates three years later.
