The History of Furnitures Greek & Roman Period |Greek furniture was unbending and rectangular. | Roman furniture tended to be more complex and practical. |Compared to Greeks, Romans made greater use of bronze, silver, gold and arble when constructing their furniture. 14th-16th Century |People of this period created beautiful furniture using an artistic approach. | Furniture started to have fewer jewels or stones embedded into its borders. | Banding, paneling and carving were the primary forms of ornamentation. 17th Century | Furniture reflecfs practically and style. |Furniture was basic and was made for whatever wood was locally available, often including Ash, Birch, Cherry, Elm, Hickory, Maple, Oak and Pine. | Furniture was simplistic and used high quality woods such as black walnut ebony, fruit-wood and holly. | Prominent in 17th century furniture were the slightly more modern ring pulls that were attached by a knob and oftentimes rested against a small metal back plate. 18th Century |Chippendale furniture – that has elegant designs and fine carvings – became famous. |Neoclassical furniture - that has straighter lines, simpler décor and strategically placed stones – was also dominant during 18th century. |Rocking chairs were a cornerstone of 18th century furniture and were a must for any house that had a porch 19th Century |The nineteenth century furniture was defined by concurrent revival styles, including Gothic (contour and ornaments), Neoclassicism (bold, straight [rectilinear lines]), and Rococo (sinuous [serpentine] curves). 20th Century |Furniture was marked by less individuality and increased mass production. IIndividual craftsmen, which were by no mean extinct, began losing more business to furniture companies which offered less expensive, less original and oftentimes mass produced furniture. | Wicker – built furniture was common. |Furniture was Usually described as Scandinavian Contemporary – marked by the use of natural woods and a utilitarian design. |Furniture employed simple designs, straight lines and virtually no ornamentation. |Comfort played an increasingly important role: almost any furniture that a person would lay on or sit in was upholstered. 21st Century |Furniture will have sleeker, less-complicated designs |Furniture will become: nature-friendly, smaller in profile, can be placed outdoors, multi-funtional, technology-driven and custom-made.
