History of Dental Care
HISTORY OF DENTAL CARE The Chinese were the first to create a bristle toothbrush. In the 17th Century, Europe adopted the bristle toothbrush with dentists advising Americans to do the same. The first electric toothbrush was developed by the Swiss just after WW2 and later introduced to the U.S. around 1960s. Toothpaste emerged in the 1800s with ingredients that included soap and chalk. Other first forms of toothpaste include ingredients such as fruit, ground shells, honey and dried flowers. In 1951, Americans began using fluoride in their public water systems to help with tooth decay among residents, a law passed by the U.S. Public Health Service. Two Frenchmen, a pharmacist and dentist designed a set of porcelain teeth in 1774. The false teeth came to America in 1822. Anesthesia was created in 1790 by a British chemist. In 1863 the gas began containing oxygen and is now used for surgical procedures. 1905 a German chemist created novocain.
