Oppositional Defiant Disorder CODDI is usuallly linked to patterns of persistent disruptive behavior in teens and children. Often times leading to arguments with people of authority or power. Some of the common characteristics of an ODD child are: • Persistent Anger Issues Hostile • Annoying • Defiant Behaviors Tantrums Uncooperative BEFORE 8 Most commonly ODD signs arise before age 8, sometimes later, but almost always before the early teen years. YEARS OLD COMMON BEHAVIOR TRAITS OF OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER Persistence Negatinlty Defiance Disobedience Hodtility Disryptive THESE BEHAVIORS MIGHT CAUSE YOUR CHILD TO HAVE TEMPER BE ARGUMENTATIVE ANNOY OTHER PEOPLE TANTRUMS WITH ADULTS DELIBERATELY GRRR BLAME OTHERS FOR MISTAKES FEEL ANGER AND BE SPITEFUL OR OR MISBEHAVIOR RESENTMENT VINDICTIVE ACT AGGRESSIVELY HAVE DIFFICULTY HAVE ACADEMIC TOWARD PEERS MAINTAINING FRIENDSHIPS PROBLEMS CAUSES Biological: Some behavior problems such as ODD have been linked to abnormalities in the brain chemicals or neurotransmitter functions. These issues could potentially cause problems with communication in the brain leading to behavioral problems such as ODD Th > *Neurotransmitters help nerve cells in the brain communicate with each other. Genetica: • Disorders within families have been shown to increase the likelihood that children will develop mental problems including mood, anxiety and personality disorders such as ODD Enviroumental: > Outside environmental factors that impact the family life may contribute to the development of ODD in children. • Factors include: • Dysfunctional family life • A family history of mental illnesses and/or substance abuse • Inconsistent discipline ADDITIONAL RISK FACTORS FINANCIAL SS A CHILD'S NATURAL PROBLEMS DISPOSITION IN THE FAMILY LACK OF ABUSE SUPERVISION OR NEGLECT LIMITATIONS or developmental delays in a child's ability to process thoughts and feelings. FAMILY INSTABILITY such as occurs with divorce, multiple moves, or changing schools or child care providers frequently. O.D.D. OFTEN COME ALONG WITH OTHER BEHAVIORAL OR MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS ATTENTION-DEFICIT/ HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER CADHD) ANXIETY DEPRESSION TREATMENT FOR OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER Treatment of ODD often includes therapy, training in positive family relationship building, and possibly medications to treat related mental health conditions. It is important to address the need for medication for other mental health problems, as it may impact the severity of ODD if untreated. Treatment with several types of psychotherapy methods for ODD is common for the child and parents and can last several months. Individual And Faumily Therapy. Focuses on making sure that the child can learn to manage their feelings more effectively and in a healthy manner. Family therapy may improve the communication and relationships. Cognitive Problem-soluing Training This therapy makes you and your child work together to come up with solutions that work for both of you and can help improve ODD-related problems. Social Shills Training Your child also might benefit from practices that will help him or her learn how to interact more positively with peers. Parent-child Interaction Therapy CPCIT). Parents work with a therapist to interact in a more constructive manner.
