The social media giant, Twitter, shot into the spotlight once the idea of hashtags caught on. However, this trend has had some success, and some tragic failures. www.infographicworld.com has created a...
n infographic entitled “Hashing out Our Problems”, detailing just a few of the twitter hashtags that came with drama attached.
One of the first hashtag campaigns came on the heels of the Susan G. Komen fund pulling more than $500,000 from Planned Parenthood. This budgeting fiasco created the #StandwithPP hashtag, led to over 100,000 retweets, and eventually caught the Susan G. Komen fund’s attention – they quickly restored the funding.
The #Kony2012 hashtag, originally intended to bring attention to Ugandan militia leader Joseph Kony, accomplished little more than raising awareness of the atrocities that had taken place in Africa for decades.
Once successful hashtag campaign, #JusticeforTrayvon, garnered more than 2.8 million tweets, and eventually pushed authorities to re-open the case.
A tweet that aired on the Colbert Report eventually landed itself on Twitter with the hashtag #CancelColbert. However, even the 100,000 tweets did little to the politico heavyweight, who is now the host of “The Late Show”.
This infographic also details two recent hashtag trends, #BringBackOurGirls and #YesAllWomen, and outlines just how interactive and eye-opening Twitter can be.
