Halloween & Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips

TRICK TREAT or SAFETY TIPS Ghosts, goblins, ghouls and things that go BUMP in the night. Make sure that HALLOWEEN stays spooky and safe for everyone. For Parents: DID YOU KNOW? Safe Kids suggests that no child UNDER THE AGE OF 12 should go trick-or-treating without an adult. Kids should be supervised while trick-or-treating. When choosing or making a costume, pick a fire-resistant material and bright colors. Put emergency identification on costumes or around your child's wrist. Include their name, phone number and address in case they get separated from you. Always add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags. Make sure treat bags are brightly-colored. TRICK TRICK TAEAT TREAT OR TRICK Make sure costumes are not tripping hazards. TREAT Younger children are safer if they don't wear masks. If your child wears one, make sure he or she can see and breathe. Tell your children not to eat any candy or treats until they've been inspected. \\\\\\ Toss any candy or chocolates that are unwrapped or unsealed. If you find candy that you believe has been tampered with, contact police immediately-even if you don't know where the candy came from. For Kids: * Trick-or-treat in familiar neighborhoods, at homes of people you know. * Take a parent or guardian with you. * Take off masks when walking between houses. * Never go inside a stranger's home. * Only visit houses that have lights on, meaning they welcome trick-or-treaters. Don't approach any dog, even if it's on a leash or confined by a fence. Dogs can be frightened by costumes and may attack even if they're nice dogs. Carry a flashlight with new batteries. Never cross the street between cars or near any bush or tree that could keep a driver from seeing you. Cross in crosswalks whenever possible. For Homeowners/ Renters: Remove any tripping hazards from your lawn, steps, driveways, etc. prior to trick-or-treat night. TRICK TREAT If you have a dog, make sure you keep it away from trick-or-treaters. even if it's a nice dog. Costumes may make your dog feel threatened and act unpredictably. Turn on outdoor lights, and make sure walkways are well-lit leading to your door. SPOOKY STATS 41 MILLION CHILDREN the estimated number of children who trick-or-treated on Halloween in 201O According to the AAA, Halloween night is the deadliest night of the year for pedestrians. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian is twice as likely to be killed if hit by a car traveling 35 mph instead of 25 mph.
