Hackers Handbook - Quick Fixes for the 7 Most Dreaded Shots in Golf

HACKER'S HANDBOOK QUICK FIXES FOR THE 7 MOST DREADED SHOTS IN GOLF THE SHANK AKA: HOSEL ROCKET, THE LATERALS CAUSE * Lunging forward towards the ball » Having weight on front of feet & standing too close » Swinging too far from outside or inside EFFECT Shanking is striking the ball on the hosel of the golf club, which causes the ball to veer off in front of the player at a severe angle. One shank loves another and shanks can become quite the epidemic. FIX Back away from the ball » Try reaching for it a bit » Plant and keep your weight on your heels » Keep rear end back through contact HITTING IT FAT AKA: CHUNK, HEAVY, CHILI DIP, FILET OF FAIRWAY SHORT CAUSE » Release the club earlyicasting » Hanging back - Reverse pivot * Swinging too far inside out EFFECT A chunk or fat shot is when your club bottoms out before the ball digging up earth and causing the shot to go nowhere. FIX » Shift weight towards target BEFORE impact. » Lead with butt end of club as long as possible and try to get your hands past the ball before impact. HITTING IT THIN AKA: BLADE, THIN LONG CAUSE Changing your posture, standing up through the shot, short arming it, falling back onto your rear foot, etc. EFFECT A low "thin" shot that lacks height and carry. The club strikes the ball too high, usually near the midpoint. FIX » Keep your rear end sticking out and your chest facing the ground until the finish. » Lengthen rather than shorten your arms through impact as you rotate your core towards the target. » Shift your weight by allowing your head an upper body to move through the shot completing a full finish on your front foot. THE HOOK AKA: DUCK HOOK, SNAP HOOK I TARGET LINE ISWING PATH CAUSE » The club is swinging too far insidelout. » The amount of curve depends on the severity of the path and how closed the clubface is. EFFECT The ball starts out right or straight (for right handers) then curves severely to the left. FIX » Keep your hands, arms and club in front of your toe line throughout the swing. » Weaken your grip if it's too strong by turning your hands more towards the target address. THE SLICE AKA: BANANA BALL I TARGET LINE ISWING PATH CAUSE » The club is swinging too far outside/in. » The amount of the curve depends on the severity of the path and how open the clubface is at impact. EFFECT The ball starts out to the left or straight (for right handers) and then curves severely to the right. FIX » Swing around your body by feeling your target side arm swing across your chest on the backswing. » Keep your upper back at the target while you start your arm swing back down. » Strengthen your grip if it's too weak by turning both your hands away from the target before you grip it. THE PUSH AKA: BLOCK I TARGET LINE ISWING PATH CAUSE » Swinging too much inside out » Clubface is open in relation to your target line. EFFECT The ball starts to the right (for right handed players) immediately off the clubface. FIX * Focus on keeping your weight (including your head) over your front foot from start to finish. » Make sure to start your downswing by rotating to the target as opposed to sliding. THE PULL AKA: THE YANK I TARGET LINE I SWING PATH CAUSE » Swinging across your target line » Clubface is closed in relation to your target line EFFECT A pull is when the ball starts to the left (for right handed players) immediately off the clubface FIX » Set your front shoulder and front hip higher than your rear shoulder and hip at address. This will help you swing inside out through impact. » Keep your head back through the strike. » Focus on hitting the inside of the ball and swinging out (to the right for right handed players).
