If Candlemas brings clouds and rain, Winter will not come again." - Old English poem Groundhog Day originates from a holiday called Candlemas day, celebrated in different ways by many religions across the globe. During Prohibition, Phil threatened to impose 60 weeks of winter on his community if he was not allowed to drink. The average groundhog weighs between 12-15 pounds and is roughly 20 inches long. Phil is larger than average, weighing in at 20 pounds and stretching 22 inches. The secret to Phil's longevity is a magical "elixir of life," which he sips during a summer groundhog picnic. The elixir is said to add seven years to Phil's life.Typically, groundhogs live six to eight years. In 1986, Phil was invited to visit the White House, In 1993, the movie DENE where he met with "Groundhog Day" was released starring Bill Murray.
