Greco Roman Museum ALexandria

The Greco-Roman Museum (Alexandria - 1892) The Greco-Roman Museum of Alexandria is one of the most important museums, not only in the Mediteranean region, but in the world, with a history dating back to the nineteenth century. Until recently, it was also considered one of the four major museums of Egypt, along with the Egyptian Museum, the Coptic Museum and the Islamic Museum. It contains not only the main archeological artifacts found in Alexandria and its surounding area, but Greco-Roman artifacts discovered all over Egypt. MOYEEION wwww www The Foundation Giuseppe Botti An Italian archeologist Akey role in the foundation of the museum was played by "Giuseppe Botti", an Italian archeologist, who came to Alexandria in 1884 as the head of the Italian school. Together with the British Consul, "Sir Charles Cookson", and others, Botti founded the Athenaeum society, which successfully lobbied the Municipality ofAlexandria for a Greco-Roman Museum. Jacques de Morgan & Khedive Abbas Helmy II (Alexandria - 1892) In 1892, this goal was initially achieved by establishing a modest archeological museum with the cooperation of the Municipality of Alexandria and the Egyptian Antiquities Service under the direction of Jacques de Morgan. The agreement to found the Greco-Roman Museum was signed in the Municipality on 1 June 1892 by and Khedive Abbas Helmy II. It was officially inaugurated on 17 October and opened to the public on 1 November of the same year. Monuments Sculpture section (halls 11-17) exhibits grave stones representing original Greek art, and some piecess how te influence between the two arts Egyptian and greek, then followed by original Roman art affected by the old Egyptian one. t for the Roman and Greek sculpture art (halls 12-14) are devoted to exhibit portraits representing the kings of Egypt from the ptolemaic epoch and also emperors of roman time which had the influence on the Egyptian and the Alexandrian History. Most famous of all , are Alexander and ptolemy IV , Cleopatra VII, Ptolemy V, and Also Julius Caesar, whose coming started a change and path over the authority to Rome and to his successors. there is also a show of the Greek and the Roman sculpture worke from different parts of Egypt. Pottery Section This section has been rearranged to show some of the artistic views of pottery and glass whereas a new collection, of pottery for vessels known as the "vessels of Queens" which are dated back to the ptolemaic epoch, has been exhibited for the first time. Besides that, the pottery has been rearanged and classified in a chronological sequence to help the visitors and specially the researchers in following the different historical stages, in addition to a collection of earthenware statuettes representing the different Gods known through the Graeco-Toman period affectedby the ancient Egyptian art. For the first time, the exhibition and development of the Graeco-Roman oil lamps have been concentrated on. Hall NO.22 has been devoted show glass models museulogically to show the improvement of glass manufacture famous in Alexandria which was one of the first cities to export its productions to Rome and other states of the mediterranean in the Hellenistic epoch. Coin Section Coin section : withe the new planning of meuseum and the modificationof the southern section which compeleted the vis- itors Tour, the Organization of antiquities thought of making the new hall a complete museum of the coins, Owned by the museum, this Collection of Coins representsa period before Alexandria , the ptolemaic , the Roman, and the Bezantine Period s. Moreover, the museum Possesses a large Collection of Islamic icons. The Monumental objects accumalated in the garden of the museum were moved to the archeological sites around Alexandria.
