The Greatest Men's Grand Slam Matches Ever

THE GREATEST MEN'S GRAND SLAM EVER MATCHES FOUR GRAND SLAM TENNIS TOURNAMENTS June July August September January May June Australian Open French Open Wimbledon US Open In the Open era (since 1969) there have been some amazing matches. Deciding on the top 5 of all time was a tough call – but here's the countdown... WIMBLEDON FINAL 2009 ROGER FEDERER vs ANDY RODDICK 5- 7 7-6 7-6 3- 6 16 - 14 Roddick had been no match for Federer in both the 2004 & 2005 Wimbledon finals & Federer had dropped just one set on his way to the final, so surely this would be more of the same? Roddick hadn't read the script. WIMBLEDON FINAL 2008 RAFAEL NADAL vs ROGER FEDERER The greatest match of all-time 6-4 6-7 6-7 9 -7 Roger Federer was the undisputed king of Wimbledon having won 5 in a row. Nadal's game was better suited to the French clay- though he'd taken Federer to 5 sets here in the 2007 final. WIMBLEDON FINAL 1999 PETE SAMPRAS vs ANDRE AGASSI 6 -3 4 7-5 This wasn't a great competitive match so much as a demonstration of perfection by Pete Sampras. The Californian won 7 Wimbledon titles, 3 in a row from 1993-1995, and another 4 in a row between 1997 & 2000. But his 1999 straight-sets defeat of fellow American Agassi in the 1999 final was surely the closest any player has ever come to grass-court perfection. FRENCH OPEN FINAL1984 IVAN LENDL vs JOHN MCENROE 3- 6 2- 6 6-4 7-5 7-5 The 24 year-old Czech Ivan Lendl was competing in his first Grand Slam title. But the more experienced McEnroe looked fully in control, winning the first 2 sets with relative ease. Then everything changed. McEnroe lost his temper with a cameraman who was making noises behind him. Lendl fought his way steadily back and though it was always tight from that point, the Czech was the better player. This was his first of 8 Grand Slam wins. US OPEN FINAL1980 JOHN MCENROE vs BJÖRN BORG 7-6 6 - 1 6 - 7 5- 7 6 -4 An under-rated match in some respects, McEnroe's 5 set win over Borg in the 1980 U.S. Open was another great clash of personalities. After being comfortably in control after 2 sets, McEnroe was rocked in the 3rd as Borg hit back with 5 clean winners to win the tie-breaker, before winning the 4th set to level the match. But a fired-up McEnroe held on, breaking Borg in the 7th game of the last set, helped by 2 Borg double faults. SOME AMAZING OPEN ERA GRAND SLAM RECORDS Players who wona Grand Slam singles title without losing a single set Ken Rosewall Australian Open 1971 Roger Federer Australian Open 2007 Ilie Năstase Björn Borg Wimbledon 1976 French Open 1978, 1980 Rafael Nadal French Open 2008, 2010 French Open 1973 Brought to you by UNIBE T
