The Great Debate: Diesel versus Gas RV Motorhomes

THE GREAT DEBATE: DIESEL S GAS RVS Since the dawn of motorhomes, choosing between diesel and gasoline vehicles has been a contentious issue. Let's take a look at what sets these two engine types apart. As a note, most of the info here refers to diesel pusher engines. Many manufacturers are developing smaller diesel engines, primarily from Mercedes Benz. These smaller engines are located at the front of the vehicle and have some features distinct from those of a diesel pusher. THE FUEL DIESEL GAS Heavy and oily Lighter Evaporates slowly Evaporates quickly High energy density High combustion temperature Ignited by compression Ignited by spark ENGINE LOCATION DIESEL GAS Generally located at the back of the motorhome, allowing for a quieter cabin. Engine is located at the front of the motorhome, making for a warmer, louder cabin, especially during acceleration. No dog house means a flat floor and easy loading and unloading. A dog house between front seats can make it troublesome to get into and out of the cabin. FUEL ECONOMY DIESEL GAS Average fuel tank: 100-250 gallons Average fuel tank: 45-75 gallons More fuel efficient but generally costs more per gallon Less fuel efficient but costs less per gallon Diesel is hard to find Requires diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to meet emission regulations-DEF tends to be expensive and a hassle to find Gas is readily available POWER DIESEL GAS Offers much more power, which means: .-More torque Doesn't have as much power, meaning steep uphill climbs have to be taken a little ---Greater towing capacity slower ...Better uphill acceleration Most feature an engine brake as an add-on option for safer downhill driving MAINTENANCE DIESEL GAS Recommended Recommended service interval: service interval: 15,000 miles 5,000 miles Requires more specialized parts and service, leading to higher rates and prices Can be serviced nearly anywhere and requires cheaper parts and hourly rates Engine longevity: 250,000+ miles before major overhaul Engine longevity: About 100,000 before major overhaul. CHASSIS DIESEL GAS Uses leaf spring suspension Uses air ride suspension .- Keeps chassis at proper level at all times Leads to swaying, pitching, and body roll caused by passing trucks, shifts in weight when turning, and strong gusts of wind IMI -Smoother ride BRAKES DIESEL GAS Air-assisted hydraulic or true air brakes Drum, drum and disc, or disc brakes .Takes less pressure to use PRICE DIESEL GAS Has a lower price tag but high-end gas motorhomes can offer just as much luxury as an average diesel motorhome Costs more but tends to offer greater luxury WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT. Choosing the right vehicle comes down to personal preference and planned use If you want a sturdy but affordable vehicle for the If you want a luxury motorhome that you can go the distance with, diesel may be your best bet. occasional family road trip, gas may be the right choice for you.
