Biosphere reserves in Africa and Asia offer an ideal ground for the protection of mankind's closest cousin while contributing to the economic and social development of local communities. Launched in 1971, UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) promotes innovative approaches to economic development that are socially and culturally appropriate, and environmentally sustainable. Zones of a biosphere reserve Biosphere reserves are learning sites for sustainable development for testing and demonstrating integrated management of natural resources and biodiversity.
