You thought India was going downhill. Poor monsoon, poorer business outlook, slowing investments, high inflation, low sentiments and above all a listless government – India isn’t in a happy place today.
But sometimes, it is important to pause and see things in context. At a time when there is all gloom and doom in India, that’s exactly what the Pew Research Center’s “Global Attitudes Project” report does.
As compared to the others, India is among the happier places in the world. In fact emerging markets – Brazil, China, India and Turkey - at large appear to have better economic outlook vis-a-vis the developed world, especially the EU and the US. What is also interesting is that the rich are particularly upbeat, especially in India. While most say that things are better today than five years ago but far fewer have a similar optimism about the next year. Almost universally, people across the world are blaming their governments for the difficult times.
