In the marketing community, we keep hearing about Google+ as the marketers dream platform. Features such as Ripples and the Circles function do seem incredibly appealing. It’s fair to say that the audience segmentation and targeting options are unparalleled and in a marketer’s perfect world, everyone would be using the service. But guys, I hate to piss on your rainbow, but no real people in the real world are using Google+. Based on anecdotal and statistical information, it seems as though the only people that are truly involved in any sort of Google+ community are the people that stand to benefit from widespread uptake of the platform. That is never going to entice the masses into abandoning their longstanding relationship with Facebook, Twitter and their new BFF, Pinterest. At the moment, Google+ is like a pool of piranhas. A Hypothetical Conversation from the Year 2050 In a post apocalyptic future, a father and son are barbequeing an irradiated swamprat over a fire, after a hard day fighting the mutant army of the Zuckerburg Corporation. The son asks his father a question about the almighty Omnicorps PLC, the company formerly known as Google.. 8+ Hey Dad, I heard Google once tried to start a social network a few decades back. Compared with the mere 126 years spent on G+.. 9,195 YEARS 32,184, 281 O H OURS 1,341,011 Wowzers! Why weren't people interested? Was Google Plus rubbish? 6 7 4 No, it wasn't rubbish. But it was a great product delivered at the wrong time. Why would anyone suddenly abandon the social media profiles they'd spent years building relationships on? 111,06 1 H OURS 46 2 9 4 DAY S 126 YEARS I guess you're right.. 1/1000 For every minute spent on G +, more than a 1000 were spent on Facebook For every dollar spent on the development of PInterest, G+ spent $15.60 $0.04 The theoretical price of G + shares, compared to Facebook's initial IPO price (based on usage data) This is the percentage of users that make a post on G+ and never make another one 30% I guess I am. <1 The amount of reshares, replies and +1s the average post on G+ receives And I think these stats were the final nails in the coffin. browser:media Sources: All facts were sourced through desktop research of the following websites and articles: compete.com, emarketer.com, reuters.com/article/2012/05/07/net-us-facebook-comscore, blog.performics.com/search/2012/05/performics-weekly-digital-research-recap-3.html, thenextweb.com/google/2011/07/01/google-cost-an-estimated-585-million-will-it-live-up-to-the-bill/ Statistics are accurate as of June 2012. www.browsermedia.co.uk 0207 099 0945 © Copyright Browser Media 2012
