Google Drive and the Battle for the Cloud

GOOGLE DRIVE and THE BATTLE FOR THE CLOUD The document sharing space is exciting and growing - businesses and consumers alike are rethinking the way they store and share data, and as a result, big players like Google are entering the space. Leveraging significant vertical integration with existing products and a massive base of users, is Google Drive poised to be a disruptive force? Google Google's position as a late entrant into the generic online document sharing space is one of strategy, rather than neglect. Starting with Search in 1998, Google has been a successful "category killer" in Webmail, Ad platforms and Mobile OS to name a few. Document sharing is merely an extension of a strategy that has served them well time and time again. LATE TO THE PARTY? GOOGLE MARKET SHARE Search Online Ads 65% 79% 10 years late 9 years late 12.2 Billion 36 Billion Searches per Month in Ad Revenue M Webmail Mobile 35% 50% 13 years late 8 years late 260 Million 52 Million Users Worldwide Users in the U.S. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR CLOUD DOCUMENT SHARING? At a high-level, cloud-based document sharing products can be broken down into Generic vs Specialized solutions - and they fundamentally address different problems. Generic document sharing providers, like DropBox and Box, focus on more general document sharing processes in both consumer and business environments. Specialized document sharing providers like Firmex and NetDocuments focus on process specific solutions, such as Due Diligence, Compliance Management, and Litigation Support - processes that are not always well served by generic products. Because of this, they are feature-rich, offer specialized security controls and expert support. Will Google be able to leverage its massive user base, vertical integration with existing platforms and extensive distribution capabilities to give them a significant advantage in the market? The generic document sharing space has an enormous addressable market and there will be room for a number of large players. Google may prove to be an important player in the generic category - however, vertically focused and specialized online document sharing solutions should thrive in a "long-tail" of niche document sharing processes too small to get the attention of larger players.
