Of all the major diseases that affect us, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, celiac disease, the reason for gluten free products, affects only 1 percent of the population. However, the gluten free business is booming. Back in 2012, the market brought in $1.9 million. In 2012, they brought in over $6.6 million. Additionally, gluten free products are typically 242% as expensive as their gluten-containing counterparts. Many people believe cutting out gluten may be the secret to improved health and increased weight loss, however, cutting out gluten “Just in case” may throw off test results. On the weight loss side, of the coin, many gluten free products have increased sugar and fats than their gluten-heavy counterparts, which may defeat the purpose. Also, foods that are naturally gluten free, such as potato chips and rice, are very unhealthy in large amounts, so binging on these may lead to some unintended health consequences.
