SOCIAL NETWORK INSUFFICIENT DATA FORUM E-PETITION MICROBLOG VIDEO MAP SMS DIGITAL ACTIVISM IS NON-VIOLENT Although digital technology can be used for both peaceful and violent purposes, the vast majority of digital activism campaigns are non-violent. In only 3.5% of campaigns did campaign initiators or participants cause physical injury to other people. DON'T BELIEVE THE HACKING HYPE Despite frequent media coverage of hacking, it is a rare occurrence in digital activism campaigns. In only 2% of campaigns did initiators or participants infiltrate or manipulate digital hardware or software with destructive or disruptive intent. IT'S NOT ONLY DIGTAL Campaigns that use digital tools and tactics often use offline tactics as well, such as protests, rallies, and hunger strikes. 48% of digital campaigns in this study also included an offline mobilization. This data is drawn from a larger data set called the Global Digital Activism Data Set 2.0 (GDADS2), which was created by the Digital Activism Research Project at the University of Washington in Seattle.
