Global DDoS Attack Key Metrics
Malicious actors use DDoS attacks, or distributed denial of service attacks, to try to make an entire website, email system, voicemail system, or network inaccessible to...
the users for which it’s intended. The goal of a DDoS attack is to make the targeted system unavailable due to extremely slow response time or an outage.
Over time, the nature of DDoS attacks has changed. They have become more intense and destructive. This infographic, Global DDoS Attack Key Metrics, compares key metrics of DDoS attacks mitigated by Prolexic in 2011 with attacks mitigated in 2012.
This infographic reveals:
• The total number of DDoS attacks increased from 2011 to 2012.
• The total number of infrastructure DDoS attacks increased from 2011 to 2012.
• The total number of application layer DDoS attacks increased, though not by as much as the first two.
• An increase in the number of attacks was expected, but as the number of attacks increased, the average length of time per attack decreased slightly.
• During this time, the average bits per second, or bandwidth, of a typical DDoS attack increased dramatically – by more than 400%.
• The average packets per second increased a whopping 710%.
