2014 GARDEN [email protected] FACTS # 1 | Gardening is the UK's most popular outdoor activity, with over 27 million active participants. #1 It is estimated that almost 50%of the British population are gardeners. 50% 50% In total, it is estimated that well over 500 visitor attractions in the UK promote their gardens for day visits, whilst there are over 3,500 private homes that open their gardens to visitors on specific days of the year. 16% of 16-24 year olds 36% of 25-34 year olds 51% of 35-44 year olds 64% of 45-64 year olds So who actually gets their knees dirty? The share of all fruit and vegetables consumed in the UK which were grown in allotments or gardens went up from 2.9 per cent to 5 per cent between 2006 and 2011, an increase of nearly 70 per cent. 10% of strawberries and raspberries were grown at home, along with 9 per cent of apples, 7 per cent of potatoes and 6 per cent of tomatoes.
