Garage Door Accidents An average of 20,000 people each year have been treated in hospital emergency rooms due to garage door related injuries. Garage doors all over North America account for thousands of injuries per year. These injuries can be minor or relatively serious and can range from minor cuts to serious bone fractures and amputations. Roughly 3 children per year between the ages of 2 and 14 are trapped and killed under automatic garage doors that are non-reversing. Many other children have suffered serious injuries or brain damage when closing garage doors hit them, while failing to stop and reverse. Canadian hospitals decided to take part in a garage door related injury reporting program and came up with some unfortunate conclusions. Between 1990 and 2005, 622 cases of garage door related accidents occurred. 79.1% of garage door injuries happen at a person's own home 36.3% of injuries take place in the summer months 68.8% of accidents involve injury to the upper part of the body.
