Prehistoric flooring materials were created by forming carpets of thread from twisted grass or animal hair that served primarily as a decorative function for the primitive homes of that era.



Foundations were generally non-existent in Egyptian times. Virgin soil above groundwater level was baked hard by the sun and leveled.



The floor of a Viking house was often dug below ground level; prehaps this helped keep out draughts.



Some of the best mosaics were seen in Sicily and Venice. The earliest designs have their origins back in 1225.



What is the oldest carpet on record? In a unique archaeological excavation in 1949, the exceptional Pazyryk carpet was discovered among the ices of the Pazyryk Valley, in Altai Mountains in Siberia. The carpet was found in the grave of a Scythian prince. Radiocarbon testing indicated that the Pazyryk carpet was woven in the 5th century BC.
