FRANKLIN PIERCE 10 Things to Know About He was raised on the family farm in New Hampshire and followed the military tradition of his family; his father was a General in the Army Franklin Pierce married his sweetheart Jane Means Appleton in 1834. They raised three children but none of them reached the age of adulthood Pierce had always been pro-slavery. Even though he opposed secession, he sympathized with the confederacy. Franklin Pierce was the first president to introduce a Christmas tree within the White House He was the first President tO present his address from memory. His speech was over 3,000 words long, and he used no notes or reference to present it He was presented with two "sleeve dogs" from Japan as pets. The dogs were so small that they could sit on a hand; he kept one and gave one away t Franklin Pierce was a religious man and a member of the Episcopalian church, however due to an active social life, and a possible link to witnessing the horrific death of his son in a train accident he became an alcoholic Because of Pierce's failures in keeping the country together, the Democratic Party did not nominate him again for president despite being the incumbent.
