Foreign Inflow and Outflow in the Bronx, New York City

CITY BY NUMBERS ALL THE WAY FROM WAWAYANDA It's fairly easy to detect changes in physical New York-old structures fall, new buildings rise, infrastructure contracts and xpands, evolves. Changes in the human city can be harder to track. Every decade about a third of the city's population turns over. Every day, about 350 New Yorkers are born and some 150 pass away. And of course, people are constantly moving in and out of the city. The U.S. Census Bureau every year keeps tab on who's moving where. In their 2010 estimates, the Bureau reported that 17,000 people arrived in the Bronx from Manhat- tan, 460 from Philadelphia and just one single soul from upstate Wawayanda. Of course, the border works both ways. What becomes clear, when you look at a place like the Bronx, is that many new New Yorkers are just trading places with others who've opted to try someplace else.
