There is no significant overall difference. However, when considering the proportions of home and away game-day fatalities at individual locations, A/B significance tests of the two independent proportions flagged some locations as being noteworthy. Generally, though, these local rates should be taken anecdotally and this map serves only to promote the discussion of a very complex topic. What is "local?" What about stadium moves? Where are the other locations? Areas of equal drive-time represent 1-hour (non-traffic) drivability zones around each stadium, based on underlying OpenStreetMap road network. Drive-time is an equitable way of generating a set of comparable areas for a question so inherently tied to a road network. Rendered by Visual Fusion. Because several stadiums have overlapping local areas, crashes occurring on a home game-day or away game-day get mixed up over time. Therefore, the following locations could not be considered: BALTIMORE & WASHINGTON, NEW YORK & NEW YORK, The following venue changes, and thus the area considered "local," were addressed. Other venue changes in this time period were geographically negligible. DALLAS: Texas Stadium 2001 - 2008; AT&T Stadium 2009 - 2011 DETROIT: Pontiac Silverdome 2001; Ford Field 2002 - 2011 PHILADELPHIA: Veterans Stadium 2001 - 2002; Lincoln Financial Field 2003 - 2011 ARIZONA: Sun Devil Stadium 2001 - 2005; University of Phoenix Stadium 2006 - 2011 % Significant difference between proportions, 99% confidence. % 95% confidence. HOUSTON: Inaugural season 2002 SEATTLE: Husky Stadium 2001; CenturyLink Field 2002 - 2011 OAKLAND & SAN FRANCISCO Fewer local home game-day fatalities Fewer local away game-day fatalities

Do home games make for more dangerous driving than when the team is away? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe in some cities it's the other way around!
