Foodspotting 101

Foodspotting 101 FoodSpotting.com has an iPhone app that helps you "find dishes" not restaurants. They say it's like "x-ray vision for food." Maybe that's a little of an overstatement, but here's how it helps you zero in on good food: Someone, somewhere sees some food that looks good. She takes a picture with her iPhone. She fires up the FoodSpotting app and describes what the food is and where she saw it. If she loves it, she adds one of her limited "Blue Ribbon" badges as a vote of confidence. She shares it via Twitter, wherever. People who now use Foodspotting in the vicinity of her sighting can see her submission and blue ribbon. No more worrying about where to get good burgers in the area; they can see the options themselves. FoodSpotting is just getting started, and whereas places like Silicon Valley and New York are bursting with photo submissions, it's hard to do a statistical analysis of foods eaten across the world... for now at least. But interesting sightings abound – from Canada to Croatia, Malaysia to Mexico. Take fried foods for example: Fried foods spotted across the globe Deep Fried Hot Dogs Clifton, NJ Deep Fried Pecan Ice Deep Fried Twinkie Amsterdam, Cream Vancouver, BC Netherlands Deep Fried Snickers Bar Manila, Philippines Deep Fried Pickles Seattle, WA Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab Sydney, Australia Nom, nom nom... Users start out with 5 blue ribbons, or "Noms," which they can give out to their favorite foods. The more reputation points they earn by participating, the more noms they can "dish out." This is part of FoodSpotting's way of preventing abuse while helping foodies weigh what's actually good. by @shanesnow for HuffingtonPost
