FASHION WEEK



Since 1943, fashion week has assembled the world's most famous and innovative designers to show their Fall or Spring collections to press, buyers and admirers. Here is a look at the beginnings of fashion week and the trends it helped to set.



Fashion Week Timeline



1943 First Fashion Week

The first fashion week was held in 1943 by

publicist Eleanor Lambert in New York. It was

originally titled 'Press Week' and was assembled

to showcase American designers.



1958 Milan Fashion Week

In 1958, Camera Nazionale del Moda Italiana

set up the first fashion week showcasing

Italian designers.



1961 London Fashion Week

The British Fashion Council orchestrated the

first London fashion show in 1961 featuring the

new avant-garde movement Mod.



1963 Madrid Fashion Week



1963 Copenhagen Fashion Week



1973 Paris Fashion Week

Moves to Carrousel du Louvre.



1985 Japan Fashion Week



2007 Over 40 Different

Fashion Weeks Established

By 2007, over 40 different fashion weeks have

been established including: Hong Kong, Barcelona,

Stockholm, Morocco, Mumbai, Los Angeles and

Berlin

Little Black Dress

Created by Coco Chanel in

1926, the little black dress

became a staple of American

women's wardrobes after

World WarII.

Sack Dress

First exhibited by Hubert

fell out of fashion in

the late 70s, only to

be revived in 2008.



Designer Jeans

Calvin Klein is credited

for the first pair of

designer label jeans.

Jeans had been popular

prior to the late 70s but

never considered high

fashion.



Raver

Fashion shows begin to

show latex, neon and

'cyber' inspired pieces.



Leggings

Leggings have been in

use since the 17th

century, but modern

leggings for women

were reintroduced by

Patricia Fields in 1979

and became hugely

popularized during the

1980s aerobics craze.

Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week is considered the

most famous of all the fashion weeks, requiring a massive
