Family Nurse Practitioners and the Affordable Care Act

FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONERS AND THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT The Affordable Care Act was enacted in March 2010. Since then, community health centers in the U.S. are serving 3 million additional patients. An additional 1.3 million patients are expected to be added through 2013. AFFORDABLE CARE ACT FUNDING AND STATISTICS IN 2011 the Affordable Care Act helped support and create 67 127 300,000 to serve an additional patients new community health centers new health center access points The country's 1,100 community health centers provide an array of preventative and primary health care services regardless of the patient's ability to pay, with about half serving rural communities." PRIMARY PROGRAMS Nurses will support preventative and primary health care through the Affordable Care Act through these initiatives/programs:? Because of the Affordable Care Act, the number of available NHSC providers has nearly tripled, growing from 3,600 in 2008 to almost 10,000 in 2012. For 40 years, the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) has supported primary care providers, including family nurse practitioners, through scholarships and loans repayment programs. To repay their debts, health care professionals work in underserved communities.? The Affordable Care Act will invest $1.5 billion over 5 years to grow NHSC. This investment is in addition to $300 million provided by the Recovery Act. With these investments, the NHSC tripled the size of its corps between 2009 and 2011.2 BETWEEN the increase in the nursing education loan repayment 2009 & 2012 program has more than doubled. A- 100 1,199 2,209 Number of registered nurses and advanced practice nurses that provided care to underserved patients including veterans, children, and the homeless. 2 NURSE MANAGED HEALTH CLINICS (NMHC) There are currently 200 NMHCS operating in 37 states with an estimated 2 million patient encounters each year.8 Funding purpose: Approximately 60% of patients seen at NMHC are • Improve access to comprehensive health care • Provide services to medically underserved and vulnerable population 60% uninsured or are on Medicaid. • Serve as clinical training sites for students • Establish and enhance electronic processes for establishing patient and workforce data collection systems. The NMHC program will provide $15 million in funding between 2010 and 2013 to support the development and operation of existing and established NMHCS managed by advanced practice nurses.
