Facts About The Mouth

FACTS ABOUT THE MOUTH In addition to its primary role as the beginning of the digestive system, the human mouth plays a significant role in communication. Another non-digestive function of the mouth is its role in secondary social and/or sexual activity, such as kissing. But there are some fascinating facts about our mouths we probably never take the time to think about, so we've compiled them for you below. 12z People whose mouth has a narrow roof are more likely to SNORE. This is because they have less oxygen going through their nose. 85% of the population can CURL their tongue into a tube. EWWWW! COOTIES! When kissing, you can expect to gain 256 colonies of bacteria from your partner. Close to 50% of the bacteria in the mouth lives on the surface of our tongue. ??? H20!!! If your mouth was completely DRY, you would NOT be able to distinguish the taste of anything. Taste is the WEAKEST of the five senses. Things like medications, smoking, not getting enough of the right vitamins, injuries to the head, brain tumors, chemical exposure, and the effects of radiation can cause TASTE DISORDERS. nom... nom... nom... If you're right-handed, you will tend to CHEW your food on your right side. Humans have unique tongue prints, just like fingerprints. And so..if you are left-handed, you will tend to chew your food on your left side. The strongest muscle in the human body is the tongue (relative to its size). The tongue is the only muscle in the body which is attached at one end only. It takes 72 muscles to flex for one to speak. I have more taste buds than YOUU..hah! LOOK! There are about 9,000 taste buds on the surface of the tongue, in the throat, and on the roof of the mouth. Taste buds contain chemoreceptors that respond to chemicals from food and other substances that are dissolved by the saliva in the mouth. In general, girls have more taste buds than boys. Average life of a taste bud is said to last up to 10 days. Humans produce about 37,854 liters of saliva in a lifetime. Saliva is required for taste-until food is dissolved by saliva, we cannot taste it. That's about 1.5 liters of saliva in one day!
