The Evolution of Snowboard Technology

THE EVOLUTION OF SNOWBOARD TECHNOLOGY 1960s Info: Sherman Poppen made a prototype for a surfboard you could ride on the snow. The prototype was a long plank made out of plastic. The first snurfer was made. Technology: • Plastic A 1970s Info: Dimitrije Milovich was inspired by slid- ing around on the snow with cafeteria trays. He later founded winterstick and produced the swallow tail. Burton used wood for the boards and water ski bindings, Sims first snow- boards where made out of poly- urithane. Technology: • Wood Cores • Polyurithane A 1960s Info: Foam cores also popped up in the 80s because of there light weight. Foam cores didn't last because of there lack of strength and durability. Foam cores were found in some snowboards even into the mid to late 90s. The first round tail design is made by sims. The first soft boot is manufactured by Burton. Technology: • Wood Cores Polyurithane • Foam Cores 1990s Info: Snowboard technology really sarts to get good. P-tex bases come in sintered and extruded. The first baseless binding are made as well as the first "soft" step-in bindings. Capped and sidewall construc- tion appeares in many snowboard models. Technology: • Wood Cores • Foam Cores • Steel Edges • P-tex A 2000s Info: As many companies have there niche tech- nology. The basic technology of snowboards have remained relatively simular since the late 90s. Technology: • Wood Cores • Carbon Fiber • Foam Cores • Fiberglass • Steel Edges • P-tex
