The godson of Queen Elizabeth, Sir John Harrington, designs the first flushing toilet, calling it a "prive in perfection." A.D. 52 1596 The Romans develop aqueducts, underground sewer systems, public and private baths, and lead and bronze water piping systems to improve sanitation. 1664 1830 King Louis XIV of France orders the construction of a 15-mile-long castiron main plumbing line. The first public water main is installed under New York streets after numerous blazes had demonstrated the need for easily accessible water in fire emergencies. The National Public Health Act is passed. Most of the world has adopted this plumbing code. 1833 1848 1891 The White House gets running water, but only on the first floor. It isn't until President Franklin Pierce takes office 20 years later that plumbing makes its way upstairs. Thomas Crapper patents a valve-and-siphon design, creating the modern toilet. Due to a shortage of copper, plastic piping was introduced to modern plumbing systems. The first plumbing code was published and nicknamed the "Hoover Code", after Herbert Hoover's efforts to instigate the code. 1966 1928 1992 The Energy Efficiency Act of the 1980s led the development of the Energy Policy Act of 1992 to reduce water flow rates in plumbing fixtures.
