The Evolution of The Mobile Phone The world's first mobile phone call was made by Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola, when he called a rival telecommunications 1973 company and informed them he was speaking via a mobile phone. The phone Cooper used, if you could call it that, weighed a staggering 1.1kg and measured in at 228.6x127x44.4mm Motorola released its first commercial mobile phone, known as the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X. It also featured a decent 5- megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and Wi- Fi. The Apple iPhone was largely responsible for changing the face of the mobile space forever. Released in October 2008, the Dream was the first commercially released device to use the Linux-based Android operating system. Android was developed by Google. Global mobile cellular subscriptions in 2008 reached 4 Billion The Android operating system was also used by Samsung ib smart phones such as the Samsung galaxy which debut in 2009 2009 Microsoft challenged other Smartphone manufacturers by announcing that Windows 2011 Phone would become the primary smartphone operating- system for Nokia, superseding the Symbian. Everything Everywhere, which is now known as just EE, launched the UK's first 4G network on 30th October and aims to provide 4G to 98% of the UK by 2014. 2012 International Data Corporation (IDC) expected smartphone shipments worldwide to reach 958.8 million 2013 units, topping last year's total by 32.7% to account for 52.2% of the mobile phone market.
